Location: Klubi Åbo
"Probably the best all-girl rock band ever!" says "Jackass" star Bam Margera, "Loud. Proud. Dirty rock. I'm in heaven!" says Jussi69, the drummer of The 69 Eyes: Of course, we are talking about "Finland's hottest girl rock band", the Barbe-Q-Barbies. Tonight, Niki Rock (Vocals), Ekkis (Guitar), Kaisa (Guitar), Minttu (Bass) and Niina (Drums) live up to their image as the "five Femme Fatales who bring every Ken down to their knees" in Finland's oldest city and former capital Åbo [in Finnish: Turku]. As usual, 90% of the audience is male, and if you have seen the Barbe-Q-Barbies in action before, you know that their male devotees don't even shrink from tearing down the barrier tape between them and the stage to get closer to their objects of desire. But, surprisingly, you won't see this kind of action tonight in the small hall of "Klubi Åbo": To the disadvantage of the girls, there is another event going on at the same time in the bigger hall of the venue, a metal event called "Turku Saatanalle 2013", and so the male metalheads - who usually represent the majority of the audience at live concerts of Niki & Co. - are already busy elsewhere. Nevertheless, the girls from Finland's capital Helsinki have reasons to celebrate since it's not only the record release of their second album "Breaking All The Rules" but also the kick-off show of the corresponding Finland tour tonight...
The set starts with "Whole Lotta You", followed by other newer tracks such as "Can't Get What You're Looking For", the album's first single "Love Machine" and the title track "Breaking All The Rules" whose performance is more than felicitous. During the introduction of the current second single "STFU", Niki reveals that the corresponding music video will be shot next week. Of course, the setlist also covers compositions from the debut album "All Over You" - like the two singles "Spell" and "Twisted Little Sister" - but the focus is clearly on the songs from the brandnew opus for which a few prominent guest musicians were invited to the "Sound Supreme Studio" in Tavastehus [in Finnish: Hämeenlinna]. The 69 Eyes guitarist Bazie - who was already in charge of some arrangements on "All Over You" - as well as The 69 Eyes frontman Jyrki69 were involved in "Whole Lotta You" while Sonic Syndicate frontman Nathan James Biggs had his finger in the pie for "Shout It Out" and "Friday".
Tonight, there is even a guest musician on stage: No-one less than W.A.S.P. guitarist Doug Blair joins the quintet to have a guitar battle with Kaisa during the last song "All Over You". W.A.S.P. and the Barbe-Q-Barbies, that's a very special relationship anyway since Blackie Lawless & Co. have chosen the girls as a support-act for more than one tour. Also the New York Dolls got to know the true promise of Barbe-Q-Barbies as an opening act, and after the show, the girls had a few lonkeros with bassist Sami Yaffa, as they once revealed in an interview.
For a lonkero with Doug Blair, there isn't any time left tonight since the band has to head directly to Vasa [in Finnish: Vaasa]. There, it will be the guys at "Hullu Pullo" who have to obey tomorrow night when the Barbe-Q-Barbies command: "Shut the fuck up and dance!"
